5 Healthy Alternatives to Junk Food

Eating healthy can be a difficult thing. After all, a lot of us feel peckish during the day and end up having a quick snack – and sometimes it’s even a bout of boredom that causes us to break open a packet of chips. We understand. We’re all human here.

While it’s difficult to break out of the snacking habit, what is infinitely more feasible and just as effective is replacing the junk food with healthy alternatives which are actually good for your body. That’s why we’re here to help.

So, without any further ado, here is our list of 5 healthy alternatives to junk food:

#1) Popcorn instead of Chips

Popcorn

Who doesn’t like opening up a packet of chips while sitting in front of the TV in the afternoon? With the multitude of options available to us – from Lays to Cheetos – it’s easy to just pick up a bag on a regular basis.

Instead of that, it’s much healthier to eat a packet of popcorn. If you get the oil-free microwave version of the favoured movie theatre snack, you can save up to 65% of calories per serving of popcorn vs chips!

So, next time you’re setting up for an evening snack, get some popcorn.

#2) Baked Sweet Potato Fries instead of French Fries

Baked Sweet Potato Fries

French Fries are one of the most popular snacks that India has adopted from the Western World. Over the years, it is a widely consumed snack which is a favourite amongst people of all ages across the country. Unfortunately, it isn’t very good for us.

Instead of the oil-fried potato snack, why not try a baked version of its cousin – the sweet potato. Baked Sweet Potato Fries are much healthier and taste just as good if not better.

#3) Fruit Juices instead of Soft Drinks

Fruit Juice

Soft Drinks have become the refreshment of choice for Indians all across the country – be it rural villages or urban cities. With the kind of advertising Coca-Cola and Pepsi use, it’s hardly a surprise. Unfortunately, this doesn’t make them any healthier to consume. The issues with soft drinks are well documented and we would all be better off with a natural alternative.

Enter fruit juices. Just pick a fruit of your choice and make a juice out of it for a beverage that is just as refreshing and infinitely healthier. Just make sure you aren’t loading the juice up with sugar and you are good to go.

#4) Frozen Grapes/Frozen Watermelon instead of Candy

Frozen Watermelon

While it’s easy to dismiss Candy as a child’s favourite little snack, they can wreak some havoc if their consumption is left unchecked. They are one of the worst enemies of dental hygiene and there are much better alternatives available, naturally.

Just grab some grapes or watermelon pieces, stick a toothpick in them and freeze them in your fridge. A few hours later, you have a snack which is delicious, refreshing, and healthy!

#5) Dark Chocolate Instead of Chocolate Bars

Schwarze Schokolade

Is there a better snack than chocolate? I certainly don’t think so and there’s no real alternative to chocolate. It is simply the best, and I’m not here to tell you to stop eating chocolate. Instead, I’m here to tell you to pick your chocolate more wisely.

Going for dark chocolate instead of chocolate bars makes for a much healthier option. Dark chocolate contains a lesser amount of sugar and more of cocoa which is the component which is actually good for you!
